*¡Reconocido a nivel nacional! ¡Ganador del premio!*

Welcome back!   We are half way through the 2024-2025 school year and what a successful first half of the year we have had.  We won our 3rd consecutive Orienteering State Championship and our 6th in 8 years. Our drill team placed 3rd out of 29 teams in their state championship, also having a great year. Our rifle team competes in their state championship following the holidays and our Drone and Academic teams begin their seasons very soon. As a unit, we have already completed more than 1200 community service hours and 500 school service hours. As we return from a well-deserved holiday break, we look forward to many great events such as competitions, championships, a trip to Charleston, SC, community service events, annual military ball (think Prom only better), and awards night. Leadership and success are not the goals, but rather the result....the result of hard work and opportunity!  Let's get to work!

Hillgrove cadets have experienced many successes over the years.  Our cadets are fiercely competitive and work very hard to put themselves in a position to be successful; winning matters! Our cadets understand that nothing is given, rather, everything is earned. They simply prepare to be the best they can be across all areas of competition and performance...success follows.

To that end, CONGRATULATIONS to ALL of our competitive teams (Brain Brawl, Drill, Drone, Orienteering, and Rifle) who each qualified for their respective Area-12 (State) Championship competitions again this year.  Hillgrove is the ONLY unit in GA to qualify for ALL five NJROTC championships; There are 61 eligible NJROTC units in Area-12.

The Hillgrove Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) was established in 2009 and commissioned in 2010. We are part of NJROTC Area-12, with our headquarters and Area Manager located in Jacksonville, FL. As one of the youngest units in the nation we quickly established ourselves as one of the top units, holding numerous Orienteering and Academic State Championship titles.  We are also the current back-to-back-to-back (3-peat) Navy National Orienteering Champions.  We have also been designated a “DISTINGUISHED UNIT WITH ACADEMIC HONORS” for nine consecutive years (2015-2023); an honor reserved for the top performing NJROTC units nationally.  We are the #1 NJROTC in the state of Georgia. Our annual cadet enrollment is approximately 100 cadets.

Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps is a citizenship development program. The NJROTC program was authorized by the JROTC Vitalization Act of 1964. The mission of the NJROTC program is “to instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.” The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, academic, drill, marksmanship, orienteering, and drone competitions, visits to industry and college campuses, and numerous other activities and trips. We follow and instill the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment and feel that active cadets will see the greatest benefits in personal growth, leadership development, and the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Quite simply, our goals are teach and actively engage our cadets in academics, citizenship, service, and competition, all while preparing them to be the best versions of themselves as they prepare for life after high school, wherever that may be.

There are costs, although minimal, associated with field trips and competition teams within our program, however, all required uniforms and learning materials are supplied at no cost to the cadet. NJROTC is an elective class (CTAE) and part of the cadet's daily school schedule. NJROTC is NOT a military recruiting program and cadets have no military obligation to serve resulting from participating in the NJROTC program. They are required to maintain grooming standards (i.e. haircuts for gentleman, etc.) and wear their NJROTC uniform periodically during the school year. Should a cadet desire to pursue a military career, they can receive up to a 2-step enlisted pay increase (approx. $4K/yr) or access to military scholarships if interested in pursuing a commission as a military officer. Qualified cadets are eligible to apply for ROTC scholarships or appointments to military academies, including scholarships only available to NJROTC cadets. Here at Hillgrove our mission is simple, "Better prepare our students for whatever their chosen career path is after high school."

NJROTC/PE/Health Credit: The Cobb County School District allows 3 credits in NJROTC to satisfy the Health/BPE high school graduation requirement. Students will earn four credits for three NJROTC classes (3 NJROTC credits, plus Health/BPE). THIS MEANS YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE HEALTH/BPE IF YOU TAKE NJROTC. In many cases, this allows the schedule space needed, particularly for freshman, to be able to participate in the NJROTC program. While it is desired to have cadets enrolled both semesters each year, in some circumstances, based on academic requirements, cadets may participate fully in the program by being enrolled in only one semester. While there are many opportunities for extra-curricular activities in NJROTC, none are required. Cadets are only graded on work completed in class. This simply means that ANY STUDENT at Hillgrove can easily participate in any other program, sport, or club activity while at Hillgrove, while simultaneously being a cadet. In fact, those who do are typically our best cadets and students at Hillgrove. You too can do it all!

Please reach out to program instructors if you have any questions relating to our program. We are all here for the same purpose, STUDENT SUCCESS. We look forward to you becoming a part of our team!

Viajes / Aeropuertos

The Academic Team participates in Brain Brawls, drill meets, and academic postals.  Brain Brawls are performed much like the college quiz bowls where a team of 4 cadets utilize buzzers during a random question scenario competing against other NJROTC units.  Cadets answer curriculum-based "toss-up" questions.  A correct answer leads to bonus questions covering all topic area of the curriculum and beyond, netting the team even more possible points.  Team members also complete at drill meets and postal competitions via the Classroom Performance System or written tests. The Academic team travels across GA and NE Florida to compete against other schools.  The team is very competitive and won the 2018 Area-12 State Championship after which they traveled to Phoenix, AZ to compete at Navy Nationals.

The Air Rifle team practices and competes IAW the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) rules. The 3 positions include: Prone (laying down), Standing, and Kneeling while shooting on a 10 meter range using authorized .177 caliber pellet air rifles. Competitions are conducted via Shoulder-to-Shoulder (STS) or postal matches. The matches are shot in a 3X10 or 3X20 format with cadets attempting to score as high as possible to a perfect 300 or 600 match. Teams consist of four members with cadets competing for individual and team awards.  Hillgrove's rifle team posted their best ever finish in 2022, finishing 3rd in the State Championship "Sporter" Division. Cadets have the opportunity to attend rifle summer camps to greatly improve their skills as they vie to improve their standing in the state.

Hillgrove's most successful team with 5 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 3 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Orienteering is a cross-country style race where runners locate control points over unfamiliar terrain using only a map and a compass. It is a type of endurance race of generally 4 to 6 KM at the varsity level and taking the best runners 45 to 50 minutes to complete. Runners use only a detailed map and compass, and their training of course, to navigate unfamiliar terrain against the best teams from around the state and country. Hillgrove cadets have won 5 of the past 7 State Championships (2018, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024) and are also the three-time defending National Champions having won the event in 2019 (Los Angeles, CA), 2022 (near San Jose, CA), and 2023 (Rutledge, GA). After successfully defending their national title this past March, they will receive an automatic invite to next year's Navy Nationals scheduled for Kings Mountain State Park in March 2024.

Orienteering is an incredibly fun sport that takes not only running skills and endurance, but also the smarts to pick the best route possibly in locating controls. You do not have to be the best runner, as quite often the smartest runner is the most successful. There are categories for Varsity, Junior Varsity, and 9th Grade runners (in fact, up to five true freshman runners will make the trip with us to defend our national title in spring 2024.  Will you be one of them?
